Dayunday
Zainudin singing. April 2000, IRM village. I interviewed 3 dayunday singers in Cotabato last December, and one in Taguig yesteray, and they agree that the dayunday was created during martial law by a certain famous singer who is still alive in Mindanao (I know his name but have to ask permission to publish it). Originally as a part of wedding entertainment, the dayunday was later utilized by politicians in Cotabato City to attract people to their rallies during post-martial law elections (see the book by McKenna 1999, Muslim Rulers and Rebels). In Manila nowadays, it is frequently used as a despedida for those going abroad. No one mentioned it being used as a lullaby, but perhaps that is where the main melody comes from--I'm not sure. Even if melodies were taken from some other genres like sengal sa wata or definitely from bayuk, but the word "dayunday" itself was created by this said famous singer specifically for this format of courtship repartee. Originally the singing was between a man (the famous singer) and a woman, later adding another woman. Nowadays, two men courting one woman is the most popular format because of the slapstick antics by the two fellows. If you notice, the guitar playing is influenced from kudyapi and not western guitar (i.e. chordal harmony). Before the dayunday, genres such as dindiken and "Moro songs" or "rebel songs" narrated stories about the war in Mindanao (1970s) and the experiences and sentiments of Magindanaon people during those times. Please feel free to send me your comments on the dayunday, especially if you've been to them. I'm writing a book. Also, I'd appreciate any insight into Magindanaon courtship practices either during past times or today.

Sa labi ng inang mahal, pagkagising;
Doon sa kasuyo ang abot ng araw;

KORO
Dahilan sa Bayan sa pagdirigmaan,
Dahil sa Bayan din sa kapayapaan,
Itong Pilipino ay maasahang
Marunong mabuhay o kaya’y mamatay.
(Mga Lalaki)
Nakukulayan na ang dakong Silangan,
Tayo na sa bukid, paggawa’y simulan,
Pagka’t ang paggawa’y siyang sumusuhay
Sa bayan, sa angkan, sa ating tahanan.
Lupa’y maaring magmamatigas naman,
At magwalang-awa ang sikat ng araw
Kung dahil sa anak, asawa at Bayan,
Ang lahat sa ating pagsinta’y gagaan.
KORO
(Mga babaing may Asawa)
Magmasigla kayong yao sa gawain,
Pagka’t ang baba’y nasa-bahay natin,
At itinuturo sa batang mahalin
Ang Bayan, ang dunong at gawang magaling
Pagdatal ng gabi ng pagpapahinga,
Kayo’y inaantay ng tuwa’t ligaya
At kung magkataong saama ang manguna,
Ang magpapatuloy ang gawa’y ang sinta.
KORO
(Mga Dalaga)
Mabuhay! Mabuhay! Paggawa’y purihin
Ang paggawa’y siyang ipaninindigan;
KORO
(Mga Bata)
Kami ay turuan ninyo ng gawain;

Fragile by Sting
"Fragile"
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
