Dayunday

Zainudin singing. April 2000, IRM village. I interviewed 3 dayunday singers in Cotabato last December, and one in Taguig yesteray, and they agree that the dayunday was created during martial law by a certain famous singer who is still alive in Mindanao (I know his name but have to ask permission to publish it). Originally as a part of wedding entertainment, the dayunday was later utilized by politicians in Cotabato City to attract people to their rallies during post-martial law elections (see the book by McKenna 1999, Muslim Rulers and Rebels). In Manila nowadays, it is frequently used as a despedida for those going abroad. No one mentioned it being used as a lullaby, but perhaps that is where the main melody comes from--I'm not sure. Even if melodies were taken from some other genres like sengal sa wata or definitely from bayuk, but the word "dayunday" itself was created by this said famous singer specifically for this format of courtship repartee. Originally the singing was between a man (the famous singer) and a woman, later adding another woman. Nowadays, two men courting one woman is the most popular format because of the slapstick antics by the two fellows. If you notice, the guitar playing is influenced from kudyapi and not western guitar (i.e. chordal harmony). Before the dayunday, genres such as dindiken and "Moro songs" or "rebel songs" narrated stories about the war in Mindanao (1970s) and the experiences and sentiments of Magindanaon people during those times. Please feel free to send me your comments on the dayunday, especially if you've been to them. I'm writing a book. Also, I'd appreciate any insight into Magindanaon courtship practices either during past times or today.

Video taken 2000, IRM Village, near Maharlika Village, Taguig. Singers names are Zainudin, Farida, and Mando.

Flamenco Virtuoso

"The Fire Cadenza composed & performed by Lawson Rollins

Sa labi ng inang mahal, pagkagising;

Doon sa kasuyo ang abot ng araw;

KORO

Dahilan sa Bayan sa pagdirigmaan,
Dahil sa Bayan din sa kapayapaan,
Itong Pilipino ay maasahang
Marunong mabuhay o kaya’y mamatay.

(Mga Lalaki)

Nakukulayan na ang dakong Silangan,
Tayo na sa bukid, paggawa’y simulan,
Pagka’t ang paggawa’y siyang sumusuhay
Sa bayan, sa angkan, sa ating tahanan.

Lupa’y maaring magmamatigas naman,
At magwalang-awa ang sikat ng araw
Kung dahil sa anak, asawa at Bayan,
Ang lahat sa ating pagsinta’y gagaan.

KORO
(Mga babaing may Asawa)

Magmasigla kayong yao sa gawain,
Pagka’t ang baba’y nasa-bahay natin,
At itinuturo sa batang mahalin
Ang Bayan, ang dunong at gawang magaling

Pagdatal ng gabi ng pagpapahinga,
Kayo’y inaantay ng tuwa’t ligaya
At kung magkataong saama ang manguna,
Ang magpapatuloy ang gawa’y ang sinta.

KORO
(Mga Dalaga)

Mabuhay! Mabuhay! Paggawa’y purihin

Ang paggawa’y siyang ipaninindigan;

KORO
(Mga Bata)
Kami ay turuan ninyo ng gawain;

Fragile by Sting

"Fragile"

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are how fragile we are
How fragile we are how fragile we are

A Song for Dad

Guyz Nite: 'Father's Day'

June 13, 2008 - The New York hard-rock band Guyz Nite plays riff-laden odes to old-fashioned maleness, from party-hearty frat-guy fare to a profanity-laced declaration of appreciation for the Die Hard movies. The band's own name demonstrates how far Guyz Nite buries its tongue in its cheek — the singer is named Guy Manley, for starters — and its song "Father's Day" is no different: There's a jokiness inherent in everything from the song's mid-'80s hard-rock arrangement to its celebration of the manly lessons passed from father to son.Read more here>>>

The Birth of Bossa Nova

WBGO, June 2, 2008 - The summer of 1958 was the season of bossa nova. Fifty years ago, a movement of melody, harmony, lyrics, and rhythm sent a fresh wave of sound throughout Brazil. In the years to follow, a small group of idealistic musicians — including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Joao Gilberto (in picture: was one of the key bossa nova pioneers )and a handful of others — would write some of the most enduring melodies in music history. Here are five songs from the magical era when the gentle sound of Brazil hypnotized the world.

Musicophilia:Tales of Music & the Brain by Oliver Sacks

There are a range of human reactions to music: from indifference to rapture, from "amusia" (the inability to recognize certain aspects of music) to a synesthetic response that imbues every musical note with its own color and taste. Our sensitivities to music can become dangerous-whether is from songs we simply can't get out of our heads or the non stop musical hallucinations a surprising number of us experience night and day. Yet far more frequently, music goes right: it can help people with Parkinson's disease who cannot otherwise move, give words to stroke patients who cannot otherwise speak, and organize people's memories who suffer from Alzheimer's or amnesia. It is clear that music has a unique power to alter the brain in remarkable and complex ways, and in ways we are only beginning to understand.

The Array Mbira

The array mbira is a modern instrument of the African thumb piano family, usually played with the thumbs and sometimes fingers commonly using metal tines.
The array mbira is a radical redesign of the African mbira. The notes of the array mbira are arranged according to the array system, invented in the United States by inventor/perform-er/author Bill Wesley. The array system is a way to rearrange the pattern by which the notes are positioned on a wide variety of musical instruments, and is both isomorphic and unimorphic (meaning that all the notes of any given key signature will be unified into a single area that excludes notes outside that key signature). There is only one unimorphic planar system, and that is the system employed on the array mbira.
The array mbira is played by a number of popular musicians, including Ry Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club and Talking Timbuktu), Emil Richards, Pharoah Sanders, Mileece, Shannon Terry, and Imogen Heap.

The Music of Mexico

Tlacochahuaya (La Noche del Castillo) Fireworks Night
About the video: As part of lighting fireworks, on some towns, that is also a night where the local band performs the best of their repertoire, and it may include different pieces, depending on the director, and how the musicians have been exposed to other arrangements while they are part of the State or Military Band. Luckily, this time this band seems to be well organized with a very talented director and members. Maestro Jose Angeles Martínez leads them in this performance of this "pasodoble" titled: "Forever Summer" (Sempre Verano)written by Maestro Martín Clavijo from Texcoco in the State of México. The soloist, Constantino Blas Pérez, proudly native of this town, displays a very good technique, sound and color on his trumpet, proof of the flexibility and adaptability of this instrument.

Another beautiful piece is this polka ("Al besarte Concepción") "When I Kiss you Concepción", (Concepción, is a popular girl's name in Latin América). We have this talented musician, Maestro Sergio Garcia Hernández, native of this town, who displays a very good knowledge of this instrument, and the velvety sound of it, combined with the playful tempo and melody gives us a magnificent performance. We can also hear how flexible this instrument has been in its adaptation to different genres. Through them we have proof of how well the bands in the Valley of Oaxaca have developed.

About the video: Every Orchestra, Band or Ensemble holds the tradition of having guest performers. The Band of Maestro Jose Angeles Martinez in Tlacochahuaya also puts that into practice, as a way to enrich the Band's performance with the talent and expertise of outside musicians. These are long time friends that Maestro Angeles has known when he was part of the State and Military Band, and also some musical organizations in Mexico City. Here, we have Maestro Erasmo Vasquez Martinez from the nearby town of Macuilxochitl performing "Czardas", a piece form the famous Italian composer Vittorio Monti. The piece seems very sober and melancholic in its beginning, but suddenly turns the tone into something full of charm and joy, proving the sweetness of woodwind trought the clarinet.

About the video: Another talented guest musician is Maestro Junior Martinez Garcia from the nearby town of Guelace, who interprets this "pasodoble" titled: "The Virgin of Tepeyac". This performer dispalys a very advanced technique and some notes are remarked with such brightness, that it matches perfectly with the genre, since "pasodobles" are ususally related to bullfight.

Ths pasodoble "The Virgin of Tepeyac" was interpreted by both, a local and a guest musician in the same performance, I only divided the video for it to upload propperly. Is the turn now for Maestro Constantino Blas Perez, proudly native of Tlacochahuaya, to delight us. Displays a very mature technique and also a soft dark sound, yet with a good balance in color and brightness.

This polka is titled "Hilda", which is also a popular girl's name in Latin America. This night concert was held to light fireworks to celebrate St. Jeronimo in Tlacochahuaya, Oaxaca, on September 2006. It is closed beautifully with a local talent, Maestro Constanino Blas Perez. Trough this magnificent performace we have an example of the great development that Philharmonic Bands have achieved in Oaxaca, and the skills of musicians and directors in this towns.

Musicians' brain are different

Brain scans have found that the corpus callosum, the contection but the two halves of musicians’ brains tends to be significant enlarged in comparison the corpus callosum found in the brains of the non-musicians. A number of other differences between the brains of musicians and non-musicians have been found, including enlargements to the cortex, auditory and motor parts of the brain. Another finding was that music tends to be processed in the left hemisphere of musician’s brains in the same areas as language, whereas the right hemisphere tends to be responsible for this task in the brains of non-musicians.READMORE>>>

Oliver Sacks’ book, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain discusses these findings, and other music and language-related cases, including one of a man who after being struck by lightening, developed an overwhelming urge to play the piano and to compose music, and felt that he was actually tuning in to the music of heaven.
